The ‘bbMiradas’ early autism detection programme is already supporting 46 babies in Albacete

Early identification and intervention for autism is possible

Autismo España, in collaboration with Autismo Burgos and Fundación Miradas, is currently promoting a project to roll out a network-based programme for the early detection of autism: the bbMiradas programme. This project is currently being implemented in 10 provinces, including Albacete. The Albacete Development-Autism Association has adopted this programme, which aims to identify warning signs in social and communicative development and autism as early as possible, thereby facilitating referral for intervention. Early identification of autism is achieved through the use of standardised questionnaires, assessment by expert professionals, observation of behaviour during play, and an innovative, non-invasive tool known as the “eye tracker”. This device allows for the exploration of early signs linked to ASD or other conditions that may affect development through eye contact, by analysing gaze duration and eye movements whilst viewing a series of videos. Babies are assessed at nine developmental stages, from 4 to 36 months.

The bbMiradas early autism detection programme in Albacete currently supports 46 babies. Seven of these babies have been referred for specialist ASD support. The remaining babies who have shown signs of atypical development have been referred to the early intervention service in Albacete. To date, three children have been discharged after successfully completing the programme.

Who can take part in the programme?

Babies aged between 4 and 36 months referred by paediatric services and nursery schools; babies showing warning signs of developmental delays; siblings, cousins or relatives of people with ASD; premature babies or those at risk during pregnancy; and families who wish to take part to learn more about their baby’s key developmental milestones and ways to stimulate learning during this stage.
